A Cry from the Heart

I would like to share you caring and stoic images from “A dark distant shore” by Tanna Reay Hill. In contrast, the novel makes me think of the cruelty of men turning clinics into a heap of rubble, seizing food from starved and undernourished. Some of cities are glutted with food and sleep peacefully; Other cities die from cold, hunger and incendiary bombs.
In late January, there were thousands men besieging the town…thousands lying in hospitals. He decided to visit hospitals again. For more than a month, he thought of nothing but the gentleness of men who suffered horribly, the injured, the dying , the nurses all rising with dignity above conditions no human could be expected to endure. They were betrayed by the stupidity, incompetence and indifference of politicians, petty officials and administrators. He thought of the huge quantities of warm clothing and preserved food that had been sent only to disappear into the bottomless pit of Customs House…He was drawn as by a magnet to these places, he might, perhaps be able to help just little. He supported the shoulders of men whose legs were amputated..he stayed as the death toll mounted… He stayed, carrying messages from men in agony. At last, he himself had received a letter from his daughter, a sad and at the same time hysterical letter reproaching him for having deserted her. He replied. Somehow he had finished his letter, somehow he explained the situation he was in, somehow collected together many reassuring words he could think of. But, it seemed she had not received his note; the messenger with whom he had sent it had been killed on the way. While bindings the wounds somewhere in the besieged town, found his daughter among the dead! It is sad. What grieves more is a voice that whispers:” …my dearest, If only I knew whether you were alive or dead, If only I knew anything! “If only I could break the inhuman indifference to suffering.
