Surat Hud (The Prophet Hud) 11 – Meccan – Ayats 123 Section – Two – Ayats 9-24

And if We give man a taste of mercy from Ourselves, and then withdrew it from him. Behold! Verily, he is in despair, and –ungratefully- (falls into) blasphemy. (9) وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنَّا رَحْمَةً ثُمَّ نَزَعْنَاهَا مِنْهُ إِنَّهُ لَيَئُوسٌ كَفُورٌ (9)
But if We give him a taste of (Our) favors after adversity has touched him; he is sure to say:”All evil has departed from me”. Behold! Surely he is exultant and boastful. (Falls into exultation and pride). (10) وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَاهُ نَعْمَاءَ بَعْدَ ضَرَّاءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ ذَهَبَ السَّيِّئَاتُ عَنِّي إِنَّهُ لَفَرِحٌ فَخُورٌ (10)
Except those who show patience and constancy, and do work righteousness; for them is forgiveness (of sins), and a great reward. (11) إِلَّا الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَئِكَ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ (11)
So, perchance you (O’ Muhammad PPBUH) might (feel the inclination) to give up a part of what is revealed to you, and that your heart/breast feels strained lest they say:”Why has not a treasure sent down to him, or why does not an angel come down with him?” But you are there only to warn! (Only Warner); it is God that arranges all affairs/Disposer of affairs, Trustee, Guardian over all things! (12) فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحَى إِلَيْكَ وَضَائِقٌ بِهِ صَدْرُكَ أَنْ يَقُولُوا لَوْلَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ كَنْزٌ أَوْ جَاءَ مَعَهُ مَلَكٌ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ نَذِيرٌ وَاللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَكِيلٌ (12)
Or they may say:”he forged it”. Say [O’ Muhammad PPBUH] :”bring you then ten Surats forged –like it- and call (to your aid) whosoever you can, other than God! If you speak the truth!” (13) أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ فَأْتُوا بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِثْلِهِ مُفْتَرَيَاتٍ وَادْعُوا مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (13)
“If then they (your false gods) do not answer your (call); know that this Revelation is sent down (replete) with the Knowledge of God, and that there is no god but He! Will you then submit to Islam?” (14) فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا لَكُمْ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا أُنْزِلَ بِعِلْمِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ (14)
Whosoever desire the life of the Present and its glitter,- to them We shall pay (the price of their) deeds therein without diminution. (15) مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا نُوَفِّ إِلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ فِيهَا وَهُمْ فِيهَا لَا يُبْخَسُونَ (15)
They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but Fire; and vain are the designs they frame therein, and of no effect are the deeds that they do! (16) أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِي الْآَخِرَةِ إِلَّا النَّارُ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُوا فِيهَا وَبَاطِلٌ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ (16)
So, is he who (depends) upon a Supreme evidence from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it (equal to a disbeliever)? And even before him is the Book/Scripture of Moses a guide and mercy? They believe therein; but those of the Sects that rejects it, – the Fire will be their promised meeting-place. So do not be in doubt thereon; for surely it is the Truth from your Lord; yet many –among men- do not believe!  (17) أَفَمَنْ كَانَ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَيَتْلُوهُ شَاهِدٌ مِنْهُ وَمِنْ قَبْلِهِ كِتَابُ مُوسَى إِمَامًا وَرَحْمَةً أُولَئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَمَنْ يَكْفُرْ بِهِ مِنَ الْأَحْزَابِ فَالنَّارُ مَوْعِدُهُ فَلَا تَكُ فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِنْهُ إِنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ (17)
And who do more wrong than those who invent a lie against God? They will be turned back to the presence of their Lord, and the witnesses will say:” these are the ones who lied against their Lord! Behold! The curse of God is on those who do wrong (Polytheists- Wrongdoers-Oppressors). (18) وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَى عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا أُولَئِكَ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَى رَبِّهِمْ وَيَقُولُ الْأَشْهَادُ هَؤُلَاءِ الَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا عَلَى رَبِّهِمْ أَلَا لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ (18)
“Those who would hinder (men) from the Path of God; and would seek –in it- something crooked; these were them who denied the Hereafter”. (19) الَّذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا وَهُمْ بِالْآَخِرَةِ هُمْ كَافِرُونَ (19)
Those are not to be defiant to (Him) in the earth and in way do they have any patrons/protectors apart from God. For them the torment/penalty will be doubled! They lost the power to hear, and they did not see. (20) أُولَئِكَ لَمْ يَكُونُوا مُعْجِزِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ يُضَاعَفُ لَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ مَا كَانُوا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ السَّمْعَ وَمَا كَانُوا يُبْصِرُونَ (20)
They are the ones who have lost their own souls/own-selves, and their false deities (fancies) will vanish from them, and leave them in the lurch. (21) أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ (21)
Certainly, without any doubt, these are the very ones who will lose most in the Hereafter! (22) لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي الْآَخِرَةِ هُمُ الْأَخْسَرُونَ (22)
Verily, those who believe and do work righteousness, and humble themselves before their Lord; they will be the companions of the Garden/Paradise, to dwell therein forever/aye. (23) إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَأَخْبَتُوا إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ (23)
The likeness of these two kinds (of men) may be compared to the blind and deaf; and those who can see and hear well; are they equal when compared? Will you not then take heed? (24) مَثَلُ الْفَرِيقَيْنِ كَالْأَعْمَى وَالْأَصَمِّ وَالْبَصِيرِ وَالسَّمِيعِ هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلًا أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ (24)

COMMENTARY:

(Verse 9)- He does not realize that some kinds of chastening are good for discipline and the training of our spiritual faculties.
(Verse 10)- He takes it as a matter of course, or as due to his merits or cleverness! He does not realize that both in good and ill-fortune there is a beneficent purpose in the Plan of God.
(Verse 11)- Their attitude is the right one: to take ill-fortune with fortitude and good fortune with humility, and in either case goes on preserving in good deeds to their fellow-creatures.
(Verse 12)- Every man of God -when he not only encounters opposition- but is actually accused of falsehood and those very evils which he is protesting against; may feel inclined –in his human weakness- to ask himself the question: “Supposing I omit this little point, will God’s Truth then be accepted more readily?” – Or he may think to himself: “If I had only more money to organize my campaign, or something which will draw people’s attention, like the company of an angel, how much better can I push my Message?” He is told that truth must be delivered as it is revealed, even though portions of it may be unpalatable, and the resources and other means to draw people to him are beside the point. He must use just such resources and opportunities as he has, and leave the rest to God.
(Verses 13-14)- See Surats Al-Bagara 2 verse 23, Surat Jonas 10 verse 38, and comments: (How do we know that there is revelation, and it is from God? Here is a concrete test: The Teacher of God’s Truth has placed before you many Surats# can you produce one like it? If there is any one besides God who can inspire spiritual truth in such noble language, then produce your evidence. Or is it that your doubts are merely argumentative, refractory against your own inner light or conscience? All true revelation in itself is a miracle, and stands on its own merits).
(Verses 15-16)- If worldly men desire the glitter of this world, they shall have it in full measure, but it is false glitter, and it involves the negation of the spiritual life which comes from the guidance of the inner light and from the revelation of, as described in verse 17 below.
(Verse 17-18)- A/ “A witness from Himself”: i.e. the Book which was given to Al-Mustapha [PPBUH] –the Holy Qur’an- which is compared to the original Revelation given to Moses. We make no difference between one true and genuine Message and another, nor between one apostle and another, – for they all come from the One True God. B/ “Guide” – the Arabic word here is Imam, a leader, and a guide, one that directs to the true Path. Such direction is an instance of the Mercy and Goodness of God to man. The Qur’an and the Apostle Muhammad [PPBUH] are also called each: a Guide and a Mercy, and so are these epithets applicable to previous Books and Apostles.
((Verse 18- Hadith Sharif: The Statement of God:”The witness will say: ‘These are the ones who lied against their Lord’”. Narrated Safwan bin Muhriz: while Ibn ‘Umar was performing the Tawaf (circumambulation around Al-Ka’ba), a man came up to him and said: “O’ Abu ‘Abdurahaman!’ or said: O’ Ibn ‘Umar! Did you hear anything from the Prophet [PPBUH] about An-najwa*?” Ibn ‘Umar said: “I heard the Prophet [PPBUH] saying: ‘The believer will be brought near his Lord’” (Hisham -a sub-narrator- said –reporting the Prophet’s [PPBUH] words: ‘The believer will come near (his Lord) till his Lord covers him with His Screen and makes him confess his sins. (Then God will ask him): Do you know (that you did) such and such a sin? He will say twice: ‘Yes, I know I did commit those sins’. Then God will say:”I did screen your sins in the world and I forgive them for you today”.’ Then the record of his good deeds will be folded up (i.e. the record (Book) of his good deeds will be given to him). As for the others, or the disbelievers, it will be announced publicly before the witnesses: ‘These are ones who lied against their Lord’”. Sahih Al-Bukhary. *An-Najwa: the private talk between God and His slave on the Day of Resurrection. It also means: secret counsel or conference or consultation.))
(Verse 19)- See Surat Al-A’raf 7 verse 45 and comment: (The unrighteous reflect their own crooked minds when the path of God is before them. Instead of going straight, they try to find something in it that suits their own crooked ideas. Frankly they have no faith in the final Goal, the Hereafter).
(Verses 20-21-22)- See Surat Al-A’raf 7 verse 38 and comment: (The earlier generations committed a double crime: (1) their own sins, (2) the bad example they set for those that followed. We are responsible –not only for our needs- but for those which our example and our teaching to our juniors may induce them to commit. But it does not lie in the mouth of the juniors to ask for a double punishment for seniors; the motive is not justice, but pure spite, which in itself a sin. Farther, the later generations have to answer for two things: (1) their own sins, and (2) their failure to learn from the past, from the experiences of those who preceded them. They should have an advantage in this respect; being “in the foremost files of Time”, but they did not learn. Thus there was nothing to choose between the earlier and later generations in the matter of guilt. But how few people understand this! In Surat Al-Ana’m 6 verse 160, we were told that good was rewarded tenfold, but evil was punished according to its guilt, in perfect justice. This verse is in no way inconsistent with it. Two crimes must have a double penalty. But we must understand “ten times” and “double” figuratively and not quantitatively). In this context, it is implied that they committed a two-fold wrong: (1) in inventing falsehoods against God, which deadened their own soul, and (2) in leading others astray, or hindering them from God’s Path. Thus they lost the faculty of hearing, which they might have used to hear the Word of God, and they blinded the faculty of sight by shutting out God’s light.
(Verses 23-24)- Note that the humility is to be “before their Lord”, i.e. in God’s Sight. There is no virtue –quite contrary- in rubbing our noses to the ground before men. We are not to be arrogant even before men because we are humble as in God’s Sight. Nor does true humility lose self-confidence; for that self-confidence arises from confidence in the support and help of God.
