We Need to Focus on the Rural Areas as Focal Point for Development, Says UNSECO-ISESCO Chair (1-2)

UNSECO-ISESCO Chair for woman in Science and Technology is one of UNSECO Chairs in Sudan. Sudan Vision continues covering the different activities of Women in public, private sectors as well as in the civil society and NGOs. The paper interviewed one of the Sudanese bright distinctive scholars and researchers participate in effectively in the field of Science and Technology in all parts of Sudan, Professor AlShefaa Abdelgadir Hassan, and the Director General of UNSECO-ISESCO Chair for woman in Science and Technology to highlight her rich experience in the science and Technology.
After warmly welcoming Sudan Vision reporters, Professor al Shefaa Abdelgadir, reviewed patiently in more than 50 minutes what UNSECO –ISESCO Chair for woman is working in Sudan.
Q: Professor al Shefaa , today we are very pleased to sit to this important chair of UNSECO-ISESCO for woman, would you brief the idea of establishing this chair for woman in Sudan ?
A: Thanks, Sudan Vision, and personally thanks for coming Neimat. UNSECO-ISESCO chair for woman is one of the UNSECO 8 chairs established early in Sudan beside chairs for water, and desertification. It was found on 4 August 2003, an agreement between the administration of Sudan University of Science and Technology, and UNSECO. It also works as ISESCO chair for scientific woman in science and Technology.
Q: How many chairs have UNSECO in Sudan?
A: There are 10 chairs of UNSECO distributed in the Sudanese Universities.
Q Prof. Al Shefaa, these chairs have specific vision works through aims and objectives, would elaborate on this?
A: UNSECO Chairs work in the field of scientific research and capacity building.
Q: What about UNSECO Chair for woman, its vision and mission?
A: Yes, This chair, one of its aims to support the scientific researches, capacity building and documentary for woman. This chair was found in 2003 by Prof. Fatima Abu Al Mahmoud the former director general who passed away recently. I was appointed in 2015 to continue the work of the chair. The chair works in different fields in many areas in north Omdurman of Khartoum state, and Gezira as well as the other states of Sudan. Its vision is to promote the woman locally and regionally in Science and Technology.
Q: What is the mission of the chair?
A: It will provide an appropriate procedure to carryout research studies in science and technology. To support transfer and exchange the reginal and Global experience, to achieve sustainable development.
Q: The activities and programs of UNSECO chair for woman, what are they?
A: We have three activities, now we the monthly forum for woman in the fields science and technology, any female scholar has a scientific paper in specific field will present it, we invite scientists in the concerned field, beside legislators, some members of the Parliament MPs, concerned organizations and the mass media to attend the deliberating discussions, and finally to come out with training workshops to implement programs in the society at the local community.
Q: Which programs did UNSECO Chair for woman implement as models for the mentioned programs?
A: Most programs that we benefited from are cultivation and aromatic plants. We an experiment presented by Dr.Saadah Nile from the National Council for Researches explained the kind of climate needed to such sort of international cultivation and aromatic plants, pointed to that its existence in Sudan.
Q: Is it possible to implement such kind of planting in Sudan?
A: Absolutely, we succeeded in implemented this program in South Darfur, West Kordufan and now in Gedarif. We hope that the Government to give more attention to such programs for it represents a national wealth. We received a gift of Business Incubators a device of extraction of oils exploiting in Sudan University for science and technology.
Q: UNSECO Chair for woman has programs of eradicating scientific illiteracy, would you comment on this?
A: We have programs of eradicating scientific, technological illiteracy for woman in five copies and now we are working the sixth copy in North Darfur. The First one was in the Red Sea State on mitigation adaption for woman in the coastal areas, this program trained 660 women on shells works, food from fish, grilling of fish to produce 26 items of fish food in the Red Sea State as a tourist area.
We trained women in the areas of Mohamed Goal, Osaif harbor, we chose 53 villages. The second program was in South Darfur in Graidah, Buram, al Salam, Belail. Women from the IDPs took placed in these training programs, beside Hakammah. We have also peace building programs.
Our training programs in the different states depend mainly on the nature, resources and the needs of the area.
