Khartoum- Chairman of the Political Committee of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) 1ST. Lt. Gen. (PSC) Omer Zainal-Abdien met at the Republican Palace yesterday Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki, in the presence of TMC Member 1st. Lt. Gen. Galal-Eddin Al Shiekh Al Tayeb.
The meeting tackled the role of the African Union in assisting Sudan to enable it to surpass this crucial stage of its political history.
The Chairman of the Political Committee explained that the mission of the TMC is to provide suitable atmosphere for enabling the political forces to assume power in the country in a peaceful and democratic way.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, on his part, said the Sudan is considered as a pivotal state in Africa and that the AU understands the popular revolution that is taking place in Sudan and the basic role that has been played by the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Faki stressed importance of exerting efforts for bringing the viewpoints closer together, affirming that reaching political accord among the Sudanese political parties on an agreed upon transitional stage is considered as basic issue.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission arrived in Khartoum Saturday on a two-day official visit, during which he is to meet the Chairman of the Transitional Military Council, 1st. Lt. Gen. (PSC) Abdel-Fattah Al Burhan Abdel-Rahman, and members of the council besides holding a number of meetings with the Sudanese political forces.
The AU Peace and Security Council had earlier decided to give the TMC 15 days to hand over power to a civilian government or Sudan would be suspended from the membership of the AU.
