The Deputy Head of the Transitional Military Council announced the release of all the prisoners of war from the different rebel groups.
Mohamed Hamdan Daglo Hemedti announced the amnesty of detained rebels in a meeting with a delegation from South Kordofan, after his appointment at the head of TMC peace committee on Monday.
Hemedi told the South Kordofan convoy for peace that the TMC decided to release all the detainee from the armed groups and added that there no political prisoners in the jails.
He further said the TMC has established contacts with the armed groups through the political committee chaired by Shams al-Din Kabbashi who is also a member of the peace committee.
He disclosed contacts with the head of the SPLM-N adding that delegate will travel to Juba to prepare for the resumption of peace talks.
The rebel umbrella Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) issued a statement welcoming the release of the prisoners of war saying it represents a “positive step” contributing to create a conducive environment and build confidence between the parties.
The SRF called for the unification of peace initiatives under the umbrella of the African Union.
Recalling their attachment to their alliance with the other Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), the rebel SRF called to combine the efforts for a comprehensive peace with the ongoing process of power transfer to a civilian-led authority.
The step taken by the TMC is an important approach to reap the fruits of the popular uprising through achieving peace in South Kordofan, the Blue Nile and Darfur.
The TMC proved its good intention which it orders the release of the prisoners of war and this should be on the top of the agendas after the resumption of talks between the TMC and the Freedom and Change (FFC) because it will lead to resolving the most complicated issue in the country since independent and contributed in the deterioration of our economy as most of the expenditure goes to war instead of development or education or services.
There are several indicators that affirms the success of the TMC intuitive on top of which is the change of the regime which was the main reason for igniting several wars in those areas.
Another indicator is that the TMC is not linked to any political entity, added to that the moves of South Sudan President, Salva Kiir to convince the armed groups to come and sit round the negotiations table with the TMC, considering the strong relations between Kiir and the armed groups’ leaders.
If the TMC managed to make the initiative a success then the Sudanese revolution will achieve one of the most important goals.
There is a big work waiting for the TMC to contribute in the stability of the country.
The TMC and the FFC should speed up to make the change through the resumption of talks to achieve the goals of the revolution.
